"An excellent place to start"

"These two CD-ROMs for the PC are an inviting way for beginning and intermediate guitarists to learn about the instrument, develop technique, and get some tunes under their fingers. Both Guitar Coach and Electric Guitar Coach offer five levels of study, a digital tuner and metronome, good sound quality, and an easy-to-navigate interface. They also feature extremely useful camera angles. The view from under the strings is especially cool - why didn't anyone think of that before?

Electric Guitar Coach includes exercises on fretting, picking, power chords, scales, and soloing. The program also offers nine songs by Eric Clapton, Green Day, and others that put these techniques to use. There are 60 lessons, 200 video clips, and 100 backing tracks (which can be played at different speeds).

Guitar Coach is designed for acoustic and classical guitarists and provides lessons, exercises, and songs to build techniques such as fingerpicking, chording, and strumming. The lessons are broken down into easy-to-digest chunks that should keep studends from feeling overwhelmed.

Guitar Coach and Electric Guitar Coach are great resources for players just starting out. The system requirements (PC with 486/66Mhz, 8MB RAM and 3.1MB hard disk space) are modest given the cool look and sound of these tutorials."

"Learning to play the guitar can be one of the most frustrating yet rewarding experiences known to man. The temptation is to learn a couple of chords before chucking away the "Teach Yourself Guitar" manual and leaving said instrument to gather dust in the attic. Which is where Guitar Coach comes in. A truly interactive guide to plucking and strumming, it will take you gently by the hand in ease you into the world of classical guitar.

Through a combination of video clips and animated tabulator, the package is designed for complete beginners and so will take you all the way from strumming your first chord to plucking a passable imitation of La Bamba from your acoustic. Far from being a gimmick, the video ads a great deal to the proceedings, owing to the original angle from which they’re filmed. Showing both the frets at the top of the guitar and the strings being plucked, you can replay the clip at will until you’re sure you’ve got it.

The learning curve is also pitched just right, with the added advantage that those who are a little more experienced can merely skip the lessons that don’t apply. The 25 lessons are arranged in a spiral with the computer first showing you what to play and how to play it, before accompanying you and illustrating the lessons with various diagrams. Happily, the sound is also excellent - although you may soon get sick of hearing the same note perfect sample being played over and over as you struggle to get your fingers round it. You’ll still need to practise long and hard, but your virtual tutor will keep you interested for far longer than you’ll be able to manage alone.

The program also includes a couple of other handy features to help you along the way. The digital guitar tuner will be a godsend for beginners, as it’s often hard to tell whether your guitar is tuned properly or not, while the metronome will keep you in time.

This is an extremely well thought out and executed package that delivers without fuss or frills. Remember though, that it’s for acoustic and classical guitar only - if you’ve got pretensions towards being the next Jimmy Page you’ll have to wait for the electric guitar version due later this year."

"We can't think of any musically or educationally useful techniques which could be employed in a guitar tutor that aren't in Guitar Coach ... Very well structured with high level of interactivity ... Excellent use of graphics and video material ... Buy it immediately ... Exceptional value for money"
Computer Music magazine

"The best user interface I have ever seen in a guitar tuition CD-ROM ... If you have never played before or want to brush up on your basics Guitar Coach is a very worthwhile purchase ..."

"LEARNING TO PLAY A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT often means having to travel some distance for lessons and paying hefty tuition fees. Even so, it could be argued that personal tuition is the only short cut to developing skills, whether they be creating music or driving a car. As far as the guitar is concerned, the problem may now have a solution now that we have Guitar Coach on CD. For any would be guitarist this program is an absolute must. Not only is it comprehensive, but all effort is taken out of the learning process and, like a good book, it's the kind of thing you won't want to put down.

The program's teaching methods carefully describe all stages of playing the instrument with such clarity that you soon feel well on the way to claiming guitarist status. The human voice, the sound of the guitar itself (faithfully reproduced) and video recordings all add to making the program straight forward and easy to use.

A capacity to repeat instantly the smallest detail is of great benefit and there can be no fear of missing out first time round. Accessibility is guaranteed even for those with limited hands-on experience and back-up material and tips give the effect of live tutorial. The whole programme is logically structured - in fact, progression couldn't be better.

If creativity is what you want you are well set since having learnt only a few chord sequences you can then go away and experiment and figure out something of your own. The course is very practical and demonstrates how to play some well known tunes, enabling the performer to play a party piece in comparatively short time. No need to worry about tuning or complicated tab notation methods either - these are also very well explained.

The program is highly recommended and represents extremely good value."

"Guitar Coach offers video footage of each exercise from both left and right hand perspectives, slow motion playback, a metronome, spoken advice and diagrams. Highlights follow the music along the stave and along the neck of the guitar as the music plays. The music can be divided into accompaniment and melody, melody and bass-line or all played at once. This is particularly useful...the whole thing works as a tutor, a practice partner and a reference library of moves and exercises"
Schools Music Association Bulletin

"Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. If I hadn't seen it for myself I would never have believed that it was possible to achieve such a high standard of instruction with a piece of software. The skills and techniques it teaches are precisely the ones which help people become true guitar players. The video, especially the view from inside the guitar, makes everything incredibly clear and the overall look of the course is quite beautiful. ... I think anyone who wants to get started or who wants to improve their technique, will get a great deal out of Guitar Coach and I believe that in time, it will be seen as a major leap forward in the way people learn to play the guitar. I thoroughly recommend it to all aspiring guitarists."
Charles Ramirez, Professor of Guitar, Royal College of Music, London

"Guitar Coach offers even the clumsiest beginner a realistic chance of becoming a supple-fingered virtuoso in a series of no-nonsense interactive lessons ... Guitar Coach is a great addition to your studio. It's easier to learn from than a book, and it's better than most other instructional CD's."
Computer Life

"For anyone wanting to learn the guitar, Guitar Coach provides the in-depth instruction necessary to make sustained long-term progress."
Liberty Magazine

"The program is simple enough to be usable within minutes and provides a solid introduction to chords, fingerstyle and playing technique ... The video incorporates some clever video footage shot from inside the guitar itself, allowing a good view of finger work from two angles."
Times Educational Supplement

"This particular CD-ROM has understandably proved to be very popular because it is a very well-considered guitar course ...there is a great deal of material to work on and this represents very good value at the price ... A really well-constructed instrument course such as Guitar Coach really does make the best possible use of the medium and scores heavily over the equivalent book ... All the material is attractively and clearly presented both in visual and musical terms and would apply to either classical or folk (or even electric) guitar players."
Music Teacher

"This is an exceptionally creative and successful use of the CD-ROM medium ... It has been produced with care and the quality of the product shines through."
